Hiring an Attorney for Bankruptcy

There are four key suggestions in hiring an attorney for your Bankruptcy filing:

1. Is your attorney experienced in Bankruptcy law? So often, when there is an uptick in Bankruptcy filings many attorneys look to enter the Bankruptcy field to increase their profits. They may only have handled one or two cases prior to meeting with you.  Attorneys looking to enter the Bankruptcy field will usually charge less or even a nominal fee in return for gaining experience in the field.  Do you want your case to be on-the-job training for an attorney?  Or do you want someone with experience and expertise in Bankruptcies?

Attorney Keith F. Carr has practiced Bankruptcy Law for over 25 years. He has represented individuals and small businesses throughout the Bay Area in Chapter 7, 11, and 13.  If you file without a lawyer in Bankruptcy? Read more….

2. At your initial consultation, are you speaking with an attorney or one of his paralegals?  Many clients do not realize that they are not consulting with an attorney at their initial consultation. The paralegal may be knowledgeable but is not an attorney and has none of the responsibilities of an attorney.  In fact, many clients may not actually speak with their attorney until they must appear in court.  The paralegal cannot appear in court and your initial consultation may be the last time to see him or her.  Would you rather get legal advice from a paralegal or an attorney?  Attorney Keith F. Carr conducts all initial consultations.

3. Will your attorney give you personalized representation?  Once hired, many attorneys simply hand the file over to a secretary or paralegal who then completes most of the paperwork and answers all of the client’s questions.  At the Law Offices of Keith F. Carr we offer personalized treatment and Attorney Carr completes the Bankruptcy petition and is always available to answer a client’s questions.  Our clients know that Attorney Keith F. Carr will get back to them the same day.

4. Does the attorney quote you a fee specific to your case or does he or she charge all clients the same amount?  If an attorney charges the same amount for all clients, chances are that attorney is operating a papermill, an operation designed to maximize a case load. That attorney cannot offer you personalized treatment or even answer your questions because he is booked solid. Often clients are not satisfied with their attorney at these types of operations because they are simply a number and not a person.  Attorney Keith F. Carr conducts all initial consultations, and then after getting an accurate picture of the client’s circumstances, offers a quote of fees and costs based upon the particular circumstances of the client’s case.
